For some dogs New
Year's Eve and fireworks are pure nightmare. They are terribly afraid and go
straight into panic. This is because the high noices come completely without
warning, it sounds very high in dog ears, and the dog can not understand
what it is. The same applies generally also in thunderstorms. There is not much we can do to get the fear to go away, but you can try to limit it to begin with. The first time a dog experiences thunderstorms or fireworks, one should try to ignore it. It is important that we do not show signs of anxiety or agitation, as it will rub off on the dog / puppy right away. Try if possible to ignore it completely. If you are afraid of thunderstorms, it is very likely that your dog will be too, as it reads it's owners reactions. Therefore try to be as calm as possible, maybe read a book or something. But if you have a filled with anxiety you can try to help it, as it feels terrible. You can ask your vet for drugs for your dog, that relieves its anxiety. BUT NEVER GIVE THE DOG HUMAN MEDICINE! In the worst case it can die of it. At the vet's or in some animal shops you can also buy a device that sends out a fragrance, which calms the dog. It is called D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone). A good solution if the dog is very scared is to find a dogsitter or a dog pension somewhere quiet, maybe in the countryside. It is better for the dog to be away from it's family for the night than to spend it in panic. |
