Children and dogs can become each other's best friends, but it can also go horribly wrong. When that happens, it's often because the child has exceeded the dog's natural borders, and it is therefore important that everyone teach their child to understand that the dog is a living creature, and that there are certain rules that must be respected. In some situations, the child should never disturb the dog. This is when the dog eats and sleeps, and it is important that the child learns to respect this consistently.

Moreover, it is a good idea never to let small children and dogs be alone together without supervision.

The child and the family's own dog
From the puppy coming into the house, the child must learn that when the puppy is sleeping, it should not be disturbed. Puppies, like small children, need much sleep in order to grow.

When the puppy is eating it should not be disrupted. In nature, a puppy / dog will defend its food because its survival depends on it. If it can not take care of its food, the other puppies in the litter will take it, and the dog will starve. This is obviously not the case in a household, but the puppy is not aware of this and it will apply the rules of nature. Instinct tells the dog to protect its food, and a child who disturbs, will be seen as a competitor.

Later, when the puppy is settled in family and gradually develops into a young and adult dog, then different rules will apply. Then it is the herd leader, who is in charge, and the leader has the right to inspect all food in the flock, and thus have access to the dogs food.

The child and unfamiliar dogs
It is important that children learn to handle dogs in a timely manner so that both baby and dog enjoy the meeting.

First and foremost, the child must learn not to approach an unfamiliar dog without being allowed by the dog's owner. And if the owner is not to be seen anywhere, the child should NOTapproach the dog under any circumstances. For examble, a dog tied outside a store, feel trapped. It knows that it can not escape, so its only defense is to bite.

Is it a stray dog, that is not tied up and not accompanied by its owner, the child should learn some defence. First and foremost, stand still. No running. Turn the back or side towards the dog. Don't look at the dog on the dog and avoid eye contact.

This can of course be very difficult for a child who is afraid, and therefore it is a good idea to practice it (without a dog). It is obviously not the goal to make the child afraid of dogs in general, but some dogs can be dangerous, and therefore it is good to take some precautions.
